the price of authenticity
the “golden shadow”–or why we choose to ignore our own power
the importance of the human experience with regards to writing & the discipline of craft
the humanity in inefficiency
Mark Marousek: I'm always saying to people, on any given day, you're brave and you're cowardly, you're generous and you're stingy. You want to be with people and you want to be alone. This is just, this is the normal way of things. And when you get that, you don't beat yourself up for not being more consistent, more monolithic and one dimensional. The fact is, we are complicated creatures. And Emerson was a real prophet of complication, you know? He understood that we are many people in one, and when you get that, it makes for a lot more originality, a lot more flexibility, and you understand that you're not this limited story.
